McDonalds Customer Treated to a Police Swoop
In a ‘sheer fluke’ police caught cannabis user, Sean Barnett, while he stocked up on munchie food at a McDonalds drive-thru.
Police surrounded the vehicle just as he was being handed his bag. Initially Northumbria Police stopped the car as the same make and model had been involved in a number of recent crimes.
"(The officer) noticed a strong smell of cannabis from the vehicle," said prosecutor Eve McDonnell.
The small bag was for his “own use”.
However, the situation only worsened when police checks revealed the car was a rental that Mr Barnett claimed he had “borrowed”. It then emerged that he was currently on a driving ban.
His solicitor said that the ban was very close to its end, only a few days from expiring. He pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis, driving without a license and take the vehicle without consent.
Mr Barnett is now part of a four-month community order under which he will serve a 8pm to 6pm curfew.
