Pubs, restaurants and cafés across central Scotland face closing from Friday as the number of cases of coronavirus continues to rise

All pubs and restaurants across central Scotland are to shut as part of a new drive to stem a wave of coronavirus cases.

The hospitality industry throughout Scotland is being hit, with stricter change in the core belts.

The Central Belt restrictions will affect those living in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Lanarkshire, the Forth Valley, Lothian and Ayrshire and in Arran.

All pubs, bars and restaurants in those areas have been ordered to close if they hold liquor licences, although snacks will be permitted.

Coffee shops not approved for alcohol may remain open until 18:00 hours.

Scotland registered more than 1.000 new confirmed cases of the virus in a single day for the first time - despite it now carrying out far too many tests than at the peak of the pandemic earlier this year.

There were 319 people being admitted to hospital with recently confirmed Covid-19 yesterday, up 57 people, with 28 people in intensive care.
