Unemployment in the Borders Grows
Unemployment in the Scottish Borders has risen by almost 20% since last year.
Statistics released from The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) showed a huge growth in benefits claimants. September last year had 1025 people claiming benefits whereas now there is 1220.
The increase in unemployment has affected all demographics but in particular 18-24 year olds seen a 11% growth.
Although the year-on-year comparison is disappointing, Jobcentre staff pointed out that the overall trend since 2013, seen a 30% decrease in benefits claimants. Galashiels Jobcentre staff have also introduced several new courses to aid more people in finding their way back into work.
